Eyelid surgery — blepharoplasty — addresses excess skin, puffiness or a tired appearance around the eyes. This article explains what the procedure can and cannot change, how it is planned, and what recovery involves.

Upper and lower eyelids are different problems

Upper eyelid surgery usually addresses excess skin that hoods the eyelid and can narrow the visual field. Lower eyelid surgery typically addresses puffiness, bags or a hollowed look.

They are separate decisions and can be performed together or independently. Combining them is a clinical judgement based on anatomy, not a package.

What it can and cannot change

Blepharoplasty changes the tissue around the eye: skin, muscle and — where appropriate — fat. It does not change the eye itself, and it does not treat vision problems.

It is not a substitute for treating dry eye, thyroid-related eye changes or other medical conditions. Those are assessed and handled first, because surgery on an untreated condition leads to disappointment.

Planning and the assessment

The assessment looks at the skin, the position and tone of the eyelid, the fat compartments, the brow, and how the eyes close and tear. Photographs document the starting point.

The plan is conservative by principle: the goal is a rested, natural look. Over-resection is difficult to correct, so restraint is part of good surgery here.

Recovery and aftercare

Bruising and swelling are expected and settle over a period your surgeon will describe for your case. Cold compresses, head elevation and specific wound care are typically part of the instructions.

Sutures are removed at a scheduled visit. Sun protection and avoiding strenuous activity for a period are standard, and follow-up confirms healing is on track.

When to call the clinic

Report severe or increasing pain, a change in vision, significant asymmetry that appears suddenly, or any sign of infection promptly.

Patients travelling home afterwards should have a follow-up plan in place before they leave.

Practical points for patients

Frequently asked questions

Will eyelid surgery make me look different?

The aim is a rested and natural appearance, not a changed identity. The plan is discussed with you before surgery, and over-correction is deliberately avoided.

Is it only for older patients?

No. Some patients have a hereditary heaviness of the upper eyelid. Suitability is a clinical decision after assessment.

How long before I can wear makeup or lenses?

Your surgeon gives you specific instructions for your case — follow those rather than generic advice.
